IIT Kharagpur, an Institute of National Importance, turns 68 today!

Long years ago, we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. – Jawaharlal Nehru.

Marking the culmination of the British colonial rule in India IIT Kharagpur started its journey on this day, 68 years ago. With the help of Dr Bidhan Chandra Ray, the then chief minister of Bengal,  eminent educationalists Humayun Kabir and Jogendra Singh in 1946, considered the establishment of higher technical institutions in India. This immediately witnessed a formation of a 22 member committee with Nalini Ranjan Sarkar at the helm of affairs. This committee put forward the idea of creation of a higher technical institute along the lines of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In those days  Bengal used to be a hub of industries, which is why the first IIT was set up in Bengal.

Hijli, which was a detention camp during the colonial rule, experienced tremendous violence in the 30's, when prominent freedom fighters like Shri Tarakeswar Sengupta was assassinated. Hijli camp also served as an army base to US troops during the 2nd World War. This very place of violence witnessed the establishment of the first IIT of India. This event was in itself a testimony to India’s independence, an end of English imperialism and oppression.

Since then ages have passed, India has transformed in each and every sector of life and so has IIT Kharagpur. Today the institute boasts off with 600+ faculty members, 2000+ employees and more than 10,000 students residing in the 21 halls of residence in the campus. IIT Kharagpur has excelled in every sphere, ranging from state of the art central library to a wide number of auditoriums, classrooms and student driven clubs. Technology students gymkhana houses a plethora of student driven clubs which offers a national exposure to the students in various spheres e.g. photography, dance, drama, debate, literature and many more. With these coupled with the exemplary education provided, IIT Kharagpur stands tall among the top 5 technical institutions of India. The 55 km roadway and age old surreal trees in the campus have experienced victory, eminence and transformation of lives. A home away from home, IIT Kharagpur continues to strive towards excellence.

Where tireless striving stretches it’s arms towards perfection, (by Rabindranath Tagore), IIT Kharagpur celebrates it’s 68th foundation day, with a pledge to continue to be an institute “dedicated to the service of the nation”.
